Tanggal 29 Februari terjadi setiap empat tahun sekali yang disebut sebagai tahun kabisat. Apa sih tahun kabisat itu? Menurut Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI), kabisat adalah tahun yang jumlah harinya sebanyak 366 hari.
Pada dasarnya bumi membutuhkan waktu sebanyak 365.25 hari untuk memutari matahari, gerakan ini disebut sebagai satu tahun matahari. Namun dalam kalender masehi angka tersebut dibulatkan menjadi 365 hari, tahun kabisat adalah ketika adanya penambahan sisa 0,25 dalam kalender masehi ditambah satu hari ke sistem penanggalan setiap empat tahun.
Menurut sistem penanggalan dalam kalender Gregorian (kalender yang digunakan di hampir seluruh dunia saat ini), tanggal 29 Februari adalah hari kabisat. Hari kabisat terjadi pada tahun kabisat, yaitu tahun dengan periode waktu yang disisipkan.
Perhitungan tahun kabisat didasarkan pada peristiwa Bumi mengorbit Matahari yang butuh waktu sekitar 365,25 hari. Namun, umumnya 1 tahun hanya terdiri dari 365 hari. Oleh karena itu, sisa waktu tersebut dibulatkan menjadi 1 hari lalu disisipkan pada bulan Februari setiap periode 4 tahun sekali. Hari ekstra yang ditambahkan pada akhir bulan Februari pada setiap 4 tahun sekali.
